Vicks VapoRub, Vaseline or Jojoba Oil for Hemorrhoids Treatment?
Hemorrhoids, which is also known as "piles," is a disorder of the anus wherein the surrounding veins become inflamed and swollen. This happens because of constant, prolonged pressure on these blood vessels. Individuals with this condition suffer from mild to moderate pain, which is quite a stressful experience. There are two types: external and internal. The classification refers to the location of the swollen veins.
Because this condition is idiopathic in nature, treatment is geared towards the alleviation of symptoms. This means it addresses pain, inflammation, swelling, and other less common manifestations of this disease. Sometimes, the prescribed treatment cannot fully alleviate the pain and ensuing discomfort of the condition. Hemorrhoid-stricken individuals look for additional means of improving their symptoms. Some of the more commonly known methods include the application of a soothing ointment on the area.
Jojoba Oil
This is an extract of the Simmondsia Chinensis plant. It is a potent moisturizer and is commonly used as an additive in cosmetics, more specifically shampoos, conditioners, and lotions. It can also increase the elasticity of the skin, thus preventing wrinkles. Also, due to its characteristic fungicidal capability, it has been used as a treatment for mildew.
Because of these properties, Jojoba oil has also been applied to inflamed external hemorrhoids. Users have reported its effectiveness in alleviating discomfort and in reducing inflammation. And because it is a natural product, it is less likely to cause hypersensitivity reactions.
Vicks
There has been quite a stir in the use of Vicks Vapor Rub to alleviate the pain of an inflamed anus. Numerous users have conflicting reactions after applying the ointment: some report that it only adds insult to injury as the ointment intensifies the pain of their hemorrhoids, whereas others say it is the best home remedy they have tried. Because of these contradictory findings, the use of Vicks for treating external hemorrhoids is not very well known.
There are two ways to apply the product on the affected area: either by directly rubbing it on the inflamed area or by dissolving it in a pail of hot water and allowing the vapor to rise up to the affected area. When used properly, it can be a potent anti-inflammatory and analgesic. Its menthol component has cooling properties that soothe any pain and reduces the present inflammation.
A word of caution: Vicks clearly indicates on its packaging that it is for external use only. Therefore, its use is contraindicated in areas with breaks in the skin. One of its ingredients (camper) may be toxic to the exposed area.
